After
his most recent bout ended in a loss to Timothy Bradley, it was widely
reported that veteran & future Hall of Fame welterweight Juan Manuel
Marquez would retire if he did not get a rematch against Bradley. After
the notion was also entertained that he fight Manny Pacquiao again for a
fifth time, if only by the media & Top Rank Promotions, it was
Bradley & Pacquiao who agreed on a rematch. Perhaps it was this
agreement that motivated Marquez to keep fighting, as it couples with
the possibility of a title for Marquez in a fifth weight class,
something no mexican fighter has ever accomplished. In comes Mike
Alvarado.
The
bout between Alvarado & Marquez has been declared an eliminator,
with the winner being given the opportunity to fight the winner of the
April 12th rematch between Pacquaio & Bradley. Alvarado is coming
off a 10th round TKO against Ruslan Provodnikov, where Alvarado lost his
WBO light welterweight title & his second fight of his career.
Alvarado’s only other loss had come to Brandon Rios, who he defeated in
their rematch. Prior to the two fights with Rios, “Mile High Mike,” had
handed Mauricio Herrera, the fighter competing against Danny Garcia on
Saturday, a loss. Few other names really stand out on his record, though
at 34-3 with 23 KO’s, Alvarado remains stiff competition.
With
the choice to fight Alvarado, Marquez has agreed to a fight that should
certainly please some fans. Though he had a less than stellar outing
against Timothy Bradley, the hard hitting Marquez will by facing off
against a man who is much more stylistically in line with himself.
Alvarado is known for his ability to flat out brawl, which is why many
were surprised when he stayed on his stool following the 10th round
against Provodnikov. Then again, it was Provodnikov, a man notorious for
being avoided. Nevertheless, Alvarado & Marquez are facing off
against one another in what should be a thriller for fans.
It’s
often said that styles make fights. Opposing styles can make for an
entertaining bout. Two defensive fighters never really bode well in the
area of entertainment. On the flip side, two offensive fighters who
aren’t afraid to go head on will always put the fans on their feet.
While one can’t expect a Rios vs Alvarado type fight, a professional
punch fest is not out of the question. Marquez is far more skilled
defensively than Rios, but will he stand against Alvarado’s power? Will
he catch Alvarado with his own power? There is plenty to ponder over
with this match up.
